How to resize every page of a PDF to A4

By Layerbit, the makers of Foolscap · Updated

Open Crop pages, choose Fit every page on A4 and press Crop it. Each page is scaled to fit an A4 sheet, kept in proportion and centred, and a wide page gets a sideways sheet.

How to do it

  1. Open Crop pages and add the PDF, or several.
  2. Choose Fit every page on A4.
  3. Tick Leave smaller pages at their real size if small pages, such as a receipt or an ID card, should not be enlarged.
  4. Type pages in Which pages to fit only some, or leave it empty for all.
  5. Press Crop it and save the copy, whose name ends with on A4.

Why a PDF ends up with mixed sizes

A PDF put together from several sources keeps each page at its own size: a US Letter form from a foreign employer, a phone screenshot, a long thin receipt, a scan made at an odd size. On screen it hardly shows. On paper, or in an office that expects A4, it does: some pages print tiny, some are cut off at the edges, and the printer may stop to ask about paper.

What fitting to A4 does

Each page is scaled to fit inside an A4 sheet, kept in proportion and centred, so nothing is stretched or cut off. An upright page goes on an upright sheet and a wide page on a sideways one. The page is not redrawn as a picture: text stays text you can select, and drawings stay sharp, only smaller or larger. A page that was already A4 looks exactly as it did.

Pages smaller than A4 are enlarged to fill the sheet. Tick Leave smaller pages at their real size for an ID card, a receipt or a photo you want printed at its true size in the middle of the sheet. Leave it unticked for a small form you want filling the page.

Fit, not trim

This sits in Crop pages because both change a page’s edges, but it does the opposite of trimming: nothing is cut away, and a page bigger than A4, such as an A3 drawing, is shrunk to fit. To cut away margins instead, see crop PDF margins. For photos that are not a PDF yet, Images to PDF puts each one on an A4 page as it makes the file.

Letter, and printing

Fit every page on Letter does the same for the US size, for a file going to someone who prints on Letter paper. Either way, print at actual size or 100%: the pages already match the paper, so there is nothing for the printer to shrink, and fit to page would only make each page a little smaller for no reason.

A worked example

Neha’s visa checklist asks for her documents as one PDF, printed on A4. She has her US employer’s letter on Letter paper, three bank statements on A4, a phone screenshot of a booking and a scanned taxi receipt. She joins them with Merge, taps Then and chooses Crop pages. She chooses Fit every page on A4, ticks Leave smaller pages at their real size so the receipt is not blown up to fill a sheet, and presses Crop it. The result line says the pages were put on A4, and the printout is even from first page to last.

Common mistakes

Expecting a small receipt to print large with Leave smaller pages at their real size ticked: it stays its real size by design. Fitting a scan with a wide dark border, which carries the border along: trim it first with Trim each edge separately, then tap Then and fit. And laying out the A4 pages several to a sheet before checking them: fit first, look through the result, then use Pages per sheet if you need it.

Questions people ask

Is my file uploaded?

No. The pages are fitted in your browser, on your device.

Does it make text blurry?

No. Pages are scaled, not turned into pictures, so text stays sharp and selectable.

Can I fit only some pages?

Yes. Type them in Which pages, like 1, 4-6; the others keep their size.

Will it stretch my page to fill the sheet?

Never. The page keeps its proportions, so a page of a different shape has white space above and below, or at the sides.

Does a locked PDF stay locked?

Yes. Type its password when asked; the A4 copy keeps the same password.

Your file stays on your device. Foolscap does the work inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is nothing for anyone to keep. How you can check
