How to do it

  1. Open Edit pictures and add the PDF.
  2. Go to the page with the picture; every picture on it is outlined.
  3. Tap the picture to select it.
  4. Choose Replace the selected picture with another, or drag it, drag its corner, or tap its ×.
  5. Press Save the changes and save the new copy.

Swapping a logo

A company changed its logo, a template still carries the old one, or a brochure needs this year’s photo. Select the old picture and choose the new one: it goes into the old picture’s box, keeping its own shape, so a square logo replacing a wide one sits centred rather than stretched. A PNG with a see-through background suits logos, because the page shows around them.

Only that picture changes. Text, lines and other pictures on the page stay exactly where they were, because the tool changes the one instruction that draws the picture and nothing else.

Moving, resizing and taking out

Drag a selected picture to move it, and drag its corner to resize it. Tap its × to take it out, and tap × again if you change your mind before saving. Every change shows on the page before anything is saved, and the result line says how many pictures were moved, replaced or taken out, and whether any change could not be made.

When a picture cannot be selected

Some things that look like pictures are not. A logo drawn from lines and shapes, as many sharp logos are, is not a picture inside the file and cannot be selected. A scanned page is one picture of the whole sheet, so a logo on a scan is part of that one picture. And a picture tucked inside a larger drawing may not be editable on its own. When a change cannot be made, the result says so rather than failing quietly.

In those cases you can still cover the old logo with Add image: a new picture with a solid background, placed over it, hides it on the page. The old one stays underneath, though, and anyone with an editor could uncover it.

Taking out is not removing for privacy

A picture taken out is no longer drawn, so nobody sees it, but its data may still be stored inside the file. That is fine for an outdated logo. For a private photo, a picture of an ID card or a signature that must not travel with the file, use Remove areas on that part of the page instead, which takes it out of the file for good.

A worked example

A school’s fee circular template still has last year’s logo at the top of each of its three pages. Meena opens Edit pictures, adds the PDF, taps the logo on page 1, chooses Replace the selected picture with another and picks the new logo, a PNG. She steps to pages 2 and 3 and does the same, presses Save the changes, and checks the copy: the new logo sits where the old one was, and the text below it has not moved.

Keeping a copy of a picture first

If you want the old picture as a file before you change it, Extract images saves every picture in the PDF exactly as stored. Your original PDF is never changed either way: each save makes a new copy beside it, named with pictures edited.

Questions people ask

Does the new picture get stretched?

No. It keeps its own shape inside the old picture’s box.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The pictures are changed in your browser, on your device, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I replace a picture on every page at once?

No. Select and swap it on each page that has it; the other pages stay as they are until you do.

Why can I not select the logo?

It is probably drawn from shapes rather than stored as a picture, or it is part of a scanned page. Cover it with Add image instead, knowing the old one stays underneath.

Does a locked PDF stay locked?

Yes. Type its password when asked; the new copy keeps the same password.

Your file stays on your device. Foolscap does the work inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is nothing for anyone to keep. How you can check
