About Compare

Shows what changed between two versions, word by word. Add the older one first, then the newer; the newer comes back marked, with new words in green and a comment wherever words were taken out. Words are compared, not pictures or layout.

How to use it

  1. Add the older version first.
  2. Add the newer version second.
  3. Press Compare them.
  4. Open the marked copy and step through the green words and the comments.

Good to know

Words that are new in the later version are highlighted in green, joined into one mark where they run on together. Where words were taken out, a comment sits at that place saying what they were. A paragraph that only moved does not make everything after it look changed. Because the older file always goes first, green always means added since then, and a comment always means taken out.

Only words are compared. A change of font, spacing, colour or picture is not reported, and neither is a page that was reordered but left the same. Numbers are words here, so a changed rent, date or figure in a table shows up clearly.

The marked copy is a new file, and both files you added stay as they were. Read it in any PDF reader, or in Read, whose comments list lets you step through every removal. Scans have no words to compare until they are run through Make searchable.

Questions people ask

Can I compare scans?

Make each one searchable with Make searchable first; a scan has no words to compare.

Can I compare more than two files?

Two at a time: the older one, then the newer one.

Does it notice a changed amount?

Yes. Numbers count as words, so a new figure is highlighted in green and a comment gives the old one.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Both are read and compared in your browser, and neither leaves your device.
