Split by size

Parts that fit a 5, 10 or 25 MB email limit. Nothing is uploaded: the work happens on this device.

About Split by size

Cut a big PDF into parts that each fit a limit: 5, 10 or 25 MB, or any size you type. Use it when an email or upload form takes several files but caps each one. If one smaller file would do, try Compress first.

How to use it

  1. Add the big PDF.
  2. Choose the most each part may be: 5 MB, 10 MB, 25 MB, or Another size in MB.
  3. Press Split into parts that fit.
  4. Save the parts, or use Save all, and send them one per email or upload.

Good to know

Each part is made as big as it can be while staying under your limit, so you get as few parts as possible. The tool saves every candidate part to measure it rather than guessing, because pictures and fonts shared between pages are copied into each part that uses them, so ten pages of a 50 MB file are rarely a fifth of it.

Here 1 MB means 1,000,000 bytes, a little less than some programs count, so a part made under 10 MB is under 10 MB everywhere. A single page that is bigger than the limit on its own becomes a part by itself, and the result says so; compress that part to bring it under.

Parts are named part 1, part 2 and so on, in page order, and the result gives each part’s size and pages. If the file is already under the limit, nothing is split and you are told so. A locked file gives locked parts with the same password.

Questions people ask

Which size should I choose?

5 MB is safe for almost any email; Gmail allows 25 MB in one email; many work systems allow 10 MB.

Are the pages changed?

No. Pages are only shared out between the parts, in order.

Can I choose the number of parts instead?

Not here. For a set number of pages in each part, use Split with Every few pages.
